GUIDANCE FOR AUDITIONEES FROM THE CREATIVE TEAM
Auditions can be a daunting process. We want you to feel as relaxed and confident as you possibly can. We anticipate large numbers of auditionees. We have tried to create a clear and concise approach to the auditions so that the process can be conducted efficiently, fairly, and enjoyably. Please read this section carefully and check the key dates.
Auditions to establish the Company – video submissions
Thank you for expressing an interest in being part of the company of Les Misérables. We very much look forward to working with members outside of the existing three companies that are collaborating to stage the production in May 2025.
As I am sure you can appreciate, there has been a great deal of interest in the production. We are hoping to establish a large company of existing and new collaborating members.
The first stage of the audition process will involve a video submission. If you are successful, you will be invited to participate in a workshop audition from which we will form our company. Once the company has been established, auditionees will be invited to audition for one specific role of their choice.
Please ensure that you complete the necessary application form and submit a photograph that helps the panel to clearly identify who you are.
For the video submission, please perform one of the following pieces:
Male voices: “The People’s Song”. (Consider the strength and focus of the students who are gaining momentum in challenging the authorities to create a new society of equality. Passionate, determined, revolutionary.)
Female voices: “At the End of The Day”. (Consider the desperation, the strength, the exhaustion of the workers who are trapped by societal frameworks and oppression. If possible, look for opportunities to reflect their hope for a better life.)
Please perform the designated section of the song. Perform the song as though it is for one character, ignore the separate character allocation.
Please use the backing tracks provided.
Please perform the piece off book.
Please ensure that the lighting for your recording enables the panel to view your performance clearly.
Please do not use any sound modification or tuning programmes. The recording should capture a truthful reflection of your vocal ability.
Please ensure that your face can be seen clearly.
There is no need to attempt to recreate costume for the performance. Wear
something comfortable.
Please send a link to your unlisted YouTube video and an up to date headshot to lesmis@nottinghamoperatic.com
We will only contact auditionees that we wish to recall to the company audition workshop. If you have been successful, you will be notified by 1 October 2024.
The Company Audition Day
Please be aware that the focus of the company audition day is to establish the overall Company. The day will be split so that people wishing to be considered for male ensemble tracks within the ensemble attend in the morning and those wishing to be considered for female ensemble tracks will attend in the afternoon.
Please note that the audition will consist of both existing society members from Nottingham Operatic Society, Carlton Operatic Society, TheCast and successful applicants from the first round of open auditions.
It is not guaranteed that all current members of the collaborating societies will progress through to the next round of auditions. As part of the agreement with Cameron Mackintosh, our company must consist of representation from the identified collaborating societies and new members who have accessed the project through open auditions.
The Creative Team would love to accept everyone and create a huge company, but we have to adhere to Health and Safety considerations and ensure that the Company can be managed safely throughout rehearsals and the week of the Production.
Before being considered for an audition for a principal role, you must first successfully secure a place within the Les Misérables Company. Nobody will be allowed to audition for one of the nine principal roles without completing a company audition for the panel.
