Nurturing talent
In our almost 130 years’ history, Nottingham Operatic Society has supported thousands of people to develop their skills for performing or working backstage. Many of our past and current members have gone on to successful professional careers in the West End and further afield.
Illustrious members
Our most well-known member was Constance Shacklock who had a successful international operatic career, and created the role of the Mother Abbess in the London production of ‘The Sound of Music’ in 1960, working with Richard Rodgers himself. Constance was President of the Society.
We are dedicated to giving everyone an opportunity to enjoy the experience of performing or working on productions.
How to Join
To join the Society all prospective on stage members will be asked to complete a New Members audition. We know that this can feel a little daunting, but our Cast Committee are really approachable, and will work hard to make this a positive experience for you.
The audition always has a singing and dialogue element, even if you want to take part as a dancer, and will normally last about 10-15 minutes. We ask you to pick a musical theatre song and bring the sheet music with you to perform for the committee – we’ll have an accompanist there to play for you. There will also be some basic movement set on the day, taught in groups and then performed for the committee. The Cast Committee want you to do your best and will understand if you stop and restart, or repeat the audition.

Annual Membership subscription for Season 2023
Acting membership: £130
Consession acting membership:(Student/Over 60/Unwaged) £80
Non-acting membership: £60
Monthly standing order payments are available.
